Cruise ship stranded in the Arctic

August 30, 2010

A cruise ship exploring the Northwest Passage in the Arctic has run aground on a rock that wasn't on the map.

Robert Bradbury of the Canadian Coast Guard said on Sunday they got the call about the stranded Clipper Adventurer late on Friday. Bradbury says the icebreaker Amundsen has been dispatched to the area and is expected to start removing passengers within a couple of hours.

He says there are 197 people on board and no one is reported injured.

The passengers will be moved via the icebreaker to Kugluktuk, Nunavut, about 50 nautical miles away.

The 90-metre cruise ship is operated by Ontario-based Adventure Canada. The company says efforts by the crew to dislodge the vessel were unsuccessful and now rests with a slight list.

50m barge washes up on Gold Coast beach

August 11, 2010

Big seas are delaying the retrieval of a 1,000-tonne barge washed up on Tugun Beach on Queensland's Gold Coast.

The operators of the Tugun desalination plant were using the 50-metre service barge to finalised work at the facility.

Paul Rees, a spokesman for the Government-owned Water Secure, says the barge was anchored about one-kilometre offshore from Tugun Beach, but the barge broke free of its moorings in heavy seas and washed ashore.

He says no-one on board at the time and the barge has not been damaged.

"That system is designed to be able to handle adverse weather but obviously in the extreme weather last night, something has given way and the barge has ended up on the beach," he said.

"I understand that there is no hazard posed to vessels or to marine life but we are investigating that we want to retrieve those ropes and find out what exactly was the cause of the incident last night."

Mr Rees says crews finalising work on the desalination plant had been using the barge but it was unoccupied last night.

"We've got a tug boat on standby up at the Gold Coast seaway and it's a matter of waiting for the right sea surface conditions, the right winds and the right tide," he said.

"There appears to be no damage to the barge and if that's the case we will just resume work."

Hundreds of people have flocked to the southern Gold Coast beach to look the barge.

Local resident Charmaine Waldie says she was not surprised it broke its moorings.

"With the waves being so big I guess the barge just broke free," she said.

Long-time opponent of the desalination and the Member for Currumbin, Jann Stuckey, says the entire project is a waste of money.

"You've got to say that this project has had more episodes than Day of Our Lives," she said.
