It seems IRON MONARCH will grace Australia's coastline for a few more years to come.

According to Bluescope Steel's in house publication "Kembla Lines", "In March 2011 the vessel will sail to Singapore where she will undergo significant work during a 60 day dry docking that will extend her life to 2016 & beyond."

The article also says, "The vessel, built in 1973, continues to maintain a very good condition, impressing industry professionals. This is a testament to the high quality of the construction and materials used at the time."

The article also celebrates IRON MONARCH delivering her twenty millionth tonnes of steel slab from Port Kembla to Westernport.

This will make IRON MONARCH which was built in 1973, 46+ years old upon her retirement!

I had a chance to go with my cousin (who worked for the USDA in New Orleans, La.) to inspect her stores, etc. I thought she was the coolest ship. Few days later she was on the news that she had sank in the Gulf of Mexico. I was a bit saddened. Just wondering in anyone knows of her, pictures, etc.

Not all ships appear in the database - sometimes real work gets in the way of keeping up to date!

Members can add new ships by selecting their toolbox and then 'add new ship'.

We have added Buddy and her 7 sister ships.

as a hobby I investigate in the history of vessels of the former state-owned East-German shipping company "Deutsche Seereederei Rostock" (DSR-Lines). Pictures of the vessels under their DSR-names I do not need. If anybody can assist me with pictures, please make contact with me. My email-address is as follows : otto2310@yahoo.de

Is it not better to compress the photo's before uploading? I had the same problem at the start as Griz so, I compress the files before I upload them. They also appear quicker on screen when looking at a ship with photos attached.

Best wishes

Hi Richard,
I was still having problems this morning. I decided to re-size the images to 50% and have just now put uploaded two images without any problems. Bruilliant trader and Maritime Anita. I hope they are good enough for your site. They seem OK to me. I have quite a few others of ships that you have no photos of so far.
Problem before was, yes it took a while, and then in the end it always came up, THERE WAS AN ERROR UPLOADING PLEASE TRY AGAIN. Do you need notifying about photos uploaded or does the server let you know anyway.
Griz (Ian)
The Griz is a nick name I've had for years, but now I have retired to a new area no ones knows me by that name. I am quite happy to be known as Griz.

Who - Mike Costello
Where - Burnham on Sea, England
What 1 - recently retired thereby allowing me more time to do shipping research. I have a fair size database of my own and concentrate on ships, their builders, dates, renamings and other statistical data, however I don't hold crew lists etc.
What 2 - I am currently trying to identify as many Japanese merchant ships as possible - from 1875 to the present day. I can get most detail from Lloyds Registers and the Miramar ship index (and now this site) but images are harder to come by all the way over here in UK. As you can appreciate, an image is all important to ensure that the ship you are adding to your database is actually correct and not another with the same name.

If any member wants help with a vessels identity, or more likely History, I will try to help if you can provide some basic information: Name, Year built, builder, company etc. Obviously not all the info may be available but every little helps; especially if there is a photo. If you send me a message then I will try to reply with a potted history, including name changes, signal codes, official numbers etc., if I have them.

Due to the current global economic situation we have decided to scrap the joining fee effective immediately and replace it with a donation.

The minimum donation is set at $10 Australian (which given the current exchange rate is probably not much more than the cost of a cup of coffee in some countries).

Hopefully those that can afford to contribute more than the minimum will continue to do so.
